Beavers are a keystone species. They’re intelligent and kind to their families and create and maintain habitats that play a vital role in ecosystems. Yet they’re called “nuisances” or “pests” because of their damming and tree felling activities.
The traditional solution for municipalities or landowners is the one the fur industry loves: trap and kill. But that’s inherently inhumane and doesn’t resolve the problem – that the habitat is ideal for beavers, and they will return, resulting in more trapping and more killing.
We have a new solution.
The Fur-Bearers wants to work with municipalities and landowners across Canada to provide various in-field solutions to the problems beavers may pose: flow devices that ensure flooding risks are mitigated, exclusion fencing that prevents beavers from damming important infrastructure, and tree wrapping to protect specific habitats. We have helped dozens of communities but are evolving our program to try and help as many people as possible with the best possible tools, strategies, and science.
We are working to train new individuals in these in-field solutions. We are partnering with University of British Columbia on research projects. And we will save lives – with your help.
Our goal is to raise $5,250 for this campaign in 2019. This will help us:
